Update (11-Jun-2023)

Hi All,

Just wanted to give you an update. I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that I have to reset my computer, so that will cause some delays on development. The good news is that all my development stuff is backed up, so once I'm set up again, I can pick up where I left off.

Furthermore, I spent last week writing for Delivery Pilot. I got about 1,000 words into the evening scene. There's still a lot more to go, because it's a pretty big, dynamic scene. I'd say before last week, I was 10% into the writing, and now I'm about 30% into the writing.

Working on these games is a passion project for me. I'm really proud of what I was able to work on, and all the great people I got to talk to along the way. It makes me really happy when people playing the game give me feedback, because it shows that they care, and that my ideas reverberated with them. But I have to also balance my hobbies with my commitments. Life gets hard sometimes, as you grow older. I never really expected this project to take this long. I foolishly though it would be done in 6 months, lol. But that's a big lesson for me in regards to scoping projects, and also I'm glad I did learn a lot along the way.

Lastly, I just want to encourage everyone else to also try making their own games. It's really fun, and a lot easier than you might imagine. It doesn't have to cost any money, but it can cost time. Just one thing I would recommend is try out smaller projects, instead of big ones, at least at the start. You learn a lot from making it, and feel pride from what you make.

Cheers!

Hi,

for us, this is mainly good news, because it means that you are back to DP, and you're making steady progress :-) Setting up a computer doesn't take that long. However, I hope you haven't lost too much of your other data - things like this can be really annoying.

I also made the experience that development always takes more time than expected. I once had a small private project that suddenly took 4 years :-o But yes, it was fun. Unfortunately, at the moment, I neither have the time nor the ideas for a private game project.

Greetings!

Thanks, that's good to hear. :) Yeah, that's true, haha. One good advice I received from another developer is that when making a game, try to first simulate it physically. Like, cut out some paper cards and try playing the game with that, or try to do it as a simple boardgame. I did that with Harem of Commander (but on Excel), and I'm really happy with how that turned out. I think it's a good exercise in keeping the scope modest, because with paper, you really can't track too many variables, lol.
